Dear Cohort,
As we complete the grading of the Foundations of Health Informatics course, I want to address an important observation regarding the use of AI tools in your submissions.
Let me be clear: the use of AI is allowed and in fact encouraged. But it should be used as a support and productivity tool, not be a substitute for your thinking.
This certificate in Applied Health Informatics program is designed around real-world applications in your own settings. When responses are generic and seem disconnected from actual LMIC workflows, it becomes clear that the work is not grounded in your environment. That defeats the purpose of the course and limits your learning.
What is Acceptable Use of AI
You may use AI to:
- Clarify concepts
- Improve writing clarity and structure
- Brainstorm ideas
- Organize your thoughts
What is NOT Acceptable
- Copying and pasting AI-generated responses as your submission
- Submitting answers that are generic and not tied to your facility or experience
- Using AI to replace observation, analysis, or problem definition
What I Expect in Your Work
Your submissions must:
- Reflect your local setting, systems, and challenges (facility type, tools, workflows)
- Use real workflows and examples (not ideal or theoretical systems)
- Demonstrate your understanding and reasoning (Personal insight and reflection)
Courses and your eventual capstone project are about solving real problems in real systems. AI cannot do that for you. Only your experience and critical thinking can.
