My name is Imoh Bassey Essien from Nigeria. I am a Senior Research Assistant at Marcelle Ruth Cancer Centre and Specialist Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. I am a Molecular Geneticist by training, and I am interested in digital healthcare systems and health informatics because of their potential to improve data management, research, and patient care in molecular diagnostics and oncology.

A key challenge in my health system is fragmented health data, with many facilities still using paper-based or non-integrated electronic systems. This limits data sharing, continuity of care, and evidence-based decision-making.

From this program, I hope to learn how to design and implement interoperable digital health systems, strengthen data governance, and use health data effectively to improve healthcare delivery in resource-limited settings.

I really enjoyed reading your post. I haven’t worked in oncology, but I have provided direct care to patients with other forms of cancer. Thank you for the important work you’re doing with research to improve outcomes for those affected. I look forward to learning alongside you.

Welcome, Imoh, it’s great to have you in the course.
The challenge you highlighted around fragmented, paper-based health data is a common barrier to interoperability and evidence-based care, and it’s one we hope to address throughout the program. You’ll gain practical exposure to system design, data governance, and effective use of health data in resource-limited settings.
In the molecular genetics space, precision diagnostics especially in oncology is increasingly more widely available. Those are underpinned by some of the digital health systems topics we will address.
