Hello everyone,

My name is Dr. Purshottam Hoovayya, and I am currently based in Bathinda, Punjab, India.

I serve as a Deputy Medical Superintendent and Associate Professor at AIIMS Bathinda, where I am actively involved in hospital administration and operations, quality improvement initiatives, and patient safety programs.

My professional background spans over 15 years is primarily clinical and administrative, with formal training in Hospital Administration and Health Informatics (21 academic credits). Over the years, I have actively pursued self-learning through various open platforms such as edX, Coursera, Dataquest, as well as bootcamps and professional meetups, through which I have earned around 50 certifications, including several in the areas of data science and health informatics.

I am particularly interested in pursuing the Digital Health Systems (DHS) track, as it closely aligns with my work in hospital management and health system strengthening.

My interest in health informatics stems from its immense potential to transform healthcare delivery—especially in enhancing efficiency, improving patient safety, and enabling data-driven decision-making in large public health institutions.

One major challenge I observe in my current health system is the fragmentation of digital systems and lack of interoperability, which often leads to inefficiencies and compromises continuity of care. Additionally, in many of the healthcare settings I have worked in, there is a lack of robust Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, along with resistance from clinicians. This resistance is often influenced by concerns related to workflow disruptions, increased documentation burden, and perceived impacts on clinical practice and financial aspects.

Through this program, I hope to gain deeper insights into designing scalable and interoperable digital health systems, along with practical strategies for implementing them effectively in resource-constrained settings.

I look forward to learning with and from all of you.

Thank you!

Hello, Dr. Purshottam. Your interest in health informatics as an administrator is quite inspiring. As you have noted, people involved in the clinical workflow are sometimes reluctant to comply with processes and practices that are necessary for quality data management. I believe that when administrators have health informatics knowledge, they are better equipped to support their data management staff and encourage good data handling practices in their team. I wish you a productive time in this course.
