All learning activities are directly aligned with capstone development, ensuring that students produce meaningful, real-world outputs.

From Clinical Encounters to Connected Care: How EHRs Transform Healthcare DeliveryThis course introduces the principles, functions, and real-world application of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and Health IT Systems through an applied, healthcare workflow-focused lens. Learners explore how patient information is captured, managed, shared, and used throughout the continuum of care, from registration and clinical documentation to reporting, decision support, and population health management.
Using OpenMRS as a hands-on learning platform, participants gain practical experience navigating an EHR environment while developing an understanding of the people, processes, workflows, and technologies that make digital healthcare possible. The course emphasizes how EHRs support clinicians, administrators, health information managers, researchers, and public health professionals in delivering safer, more coordinated, and more efficient care.
The course focuses on answering critical health information system questions:
- How does patient information move through a healthcare system?
- What information should be captured, structured, and maintained?
- How do EHRs support clinical decision-making and care coordination?
- Why do many EHR implementations succeed or fail?
- How can digital systems improve healthcare quality, efficiency, and outcomes?
Through practical OpenMRS exercises, workflow analyses, implementation case studies, and real-world healthcare scenarios, learners will develop the ability to understand healthcare processes from both clinical and technical perspectives. By the end of the course, participants will be able to evaluate EHR workflows, identify opportunities for improvement, understand key implementation considerations, and apply EHR concepts to support healthcare delivery and digital transformation initiatives in both LMIC and high-resource settings.

Final Capstone Reflection - What Transfers and What Does Not Forum
So, in order to make it a bit smoother of a ride onto the next module, I'll go ahead and boil down grading/assessment requirements to this final reflection prompt. Please take your time and work through each section, giving it the care I hope this subject matter has elicited in all of you so far:
1. Where a reading gave you language for something you already knew. Point to one idea, term, or framework from the readings that named something you have already seen in your own setting. Describe what you saw, and what the reading calls it.2. Where a reading does not fit your reality. Point to one place where a reading, a law, or a framework assumes conditions that do not exist where you work. Be specific about the assumption, and specific about the reality. This is the most useful thing you can write here.
3. One thing you could change in 30 days. Name one change you could make without new budget, new staff, or new authority from above. Small is fine. Say who you would need to talk to first.
Optional fourth: one question the readings left you with that you still cannot answer.
